Louise Child - Tantric Buddhism and Altered States of Consciousness

This book explores the role of altered states of consciousness in the communication of social and emotional energies, both on a societal level and between individual persons. Drawing from an original reading of Durkheimian social theorists (including Mauss, Hertz, and Hubert) and Jungian psychology, Louise Child applies this analysis to tantric Buddhist ritual and biographical material. She suggests ways in which dreams and visionary experiences (including those related to the 'subtle body') play an important and previously under-explored role in tantric understandings of the consort relationship.

Pat Zalewski - Talismans & Evocations of the Golden Dawn

This book on talismans and evocation techniques is a further extension of my previous 'Z' works regarding the magical techniques used by the Golden Dawn. Although much has been written on the history and initiation ceremonies of the Order of the Golden Dawn and its successors, the Stella Matutina and Whare Ra, little has been presented on the practical magical workings of its Inner Order the Rosae Rubae Et Aureae Crucis. Many assume that the order members simply performed the rituals presented by Israel Regardie in his Golden Dawn book. However this is far from the case. A large body of teaching was presented to the new initiate about
evocation and talisman manufacture and each adept was expected to use this information to write and perform his or her own rituals

Pat Zalewski - Inner Order Teachings of the Golden Dawn

This book is vital for anyone who claims to follow the Golden Dawn tradition. It reveals the depth of the teaching of the Rosae Rubeae et Aureae and Zalewski's instructions show how this may be practically used. Without this material, it is difficult to see how a modern Golden Dawn adept could claim the title.

Wescott, William Wynn - Sepher Yetzirah

The "Sepher Yetzirah," or "Book of Formation," is perhaps the oldest Rabbinical treatise of Kabalistic philosophy which is still extant. The great interest which has been evinced of late years in the Hebrew Kabalah, and the modes of thought and doctrine allied to it, has induced me to translate this tractate from the original Hebrew texts, and to collate with them the Latin versions of mediaeval authorities and the author also published An Introduction to the Kabalah which may be found useful to students. The "Sepher Yetzirah," although this name means "The Book of Formation," is not in any sense a narrative of Creation, or a substitute Genesis, but is an ancient and instructive philosophical treatise upon one aspect of the origin of the universe and mankind an aspect at once archaic and essentially Hebrew. The grouping of the processes of origin into an arrangement, at once alphabetic and numeral, is one only to be found in Semitic author

Transactions Supplement to the Bibliographical London Society No. 1 (Dee Manuscripts)

IN 1842 J. O. Halliwell edited for the Camden Society a volume entitled The Diary of Dr. John Dee. To the diary itself, which extends with considerable gaps over the years (1554) 1577 to 1601, he appended the catalogue of Dee's manuscript library, taken from an autograph MS. in the Gale Collection at Trinity College, Cambridge' (0. 4. 20). This catalogue it is my purpose to reprint here, and to furnish what information I can about the books entered in it. Bibliographers will readily agree that this is worth doing. They will remember that Dee was not merely an alchemist and spiritualist, but a really learned man, and one who had done his best, by petitions and otherwise, to stimulate interest in the rescuing of MSS. from the dissolved monastic libraries and to induce the sovereign to establish a central national collection of
them. They will also be aware that we have but very few sixteenth-century English catalogues of manuscript collections, and that the investigation of the destinies of a dispersed library may be made to throw much light upon the fol'1nation of the collections which still exist.

Macgregor Mathers - The Secret Knowledge of the Neophyte

Introduction:

The Neophyte Ceremony, for the Candidate, ended when the
Hierophant stated, "Resu+e your seat in the Nlorthj-Wlest] and remember that your admission to this Order gives you no right to initiate any other person without a dispensation from the Greatly Honoured Chiefs of the Second Order." While the Candidate was in a heightened state of darkness they would hear an address, written by Adepts of the Second Order, that helped shed some light upon their Ceremony of Admission. Other Neophyte Addresses were read at Equinoctial!or Regular Assemblies. The addresses in this book are dated from March 1898 to January 1954. All of the addresses, with the exception of Maim Chioth [Harriet Felkin]'s, were loaned to members to hand copy and return within three months. The address by Deo Date Comite Ferro (S.L. Mathers) was hand-written and read to the Horus Temple in his absence. Even though Mathers states, "In this address I do not ihtend to charge any of you herewith [the sin of Spiritual Pride]," I wonder if he was warding off any future attempts at the Golden Dawn throne, which Westcott left to Mathers when he resigned from the Order in 1897.
The address by Perseverantia (Paul Foster Case) was the only address that was published and sold to members of the Order. His address is very significant because it foreshadows the teaching which he later brought to his esoteric school, the Builders of the Adytum, in 1922. The addresses by Aur Mem Mearab [R.W. Felkin] were read after a Neophyte Ceremony, while the addresses by Maim Chioth were read at
Regular Assemblies. The address by Nunc et Semper (Lilli Geise) is a fine example of the addresses she read in the American Golden Dawn Temples. Appendix A contains the Allocution from the Grade of Neophyte
0°=0° of the Smaragdum Thalasses Temple of the Order of the Stella Matutina and was probably written by Sacramentum Regis

Kuntz, Darcy - The Kabbalah of the Golden Dawn

Introduction:

What is the Jewish Kabbalah? To some persons the sound of the word
will be familiar, though the ideas which it conveys will probably be vague in the extreme, while to many, indeed, the very name will be unknown. What is the Jewish Kabbalah? If we tum to those general storehouses of all kinds of knowledge, the encyclopaedias, we find but bald and unsatisfactory information. Thus Burrowes' Modern Encyclopaedia says: "The Hebrew Cabbala signifies tradition; and the Rabbins who are called Cabbalists, study principally the combination of particular words, letters, and numbers, and by this means pretend to discover what is to come, and to see clearly into the sense of many difficult passages of Scripture. There are no sure principles of this knowledge, but it depends upon some particular traditions of the ancients, for which reason it is termed Cabbala. The secrets of the Cabbala are said to have been discovered to Moses on Mount Sinai; and to have been delivered from him down from father to son, without interruption, and without any use of letters; for to write them down is what they are by no means permitted to do ... There is another Cabbala, called artificial, which consists in searching for abstruse and mysterious signification of a word in Scripture, from whence they borrow certain explanations, by combining the letters which compose it; this Cabbala is divided into three kinds, the gematrie [gematria], the notaricon, and the temura or themura. The first whereof consists in taking the letters of a Hebrew word for cyphers or arithmetical numbers, and explaining every word by the arithmetical value of the letters whereof it is composed. The second sort of Cabbala, called notaricon, consists in taking every particular letter of a word for an entire diction; and the third, called themura, i.e., change, consists in making different transpositions or changes of letters, placing one for the other, or one before the other

Kuntz, Darcy - The Chronology of the Golden Dawn

Introduction:

When I began co-creating this chronology, I soon realised the book would not satisfy all its readers. For example, rather than providing footnotes, we chose to list our primary sources for the chronology in the bibliography. No doubt there will be those who will feel this or that fact should or should not have been included. If we were to attempt to compile a truly comprehensive chronology of the Golden Dawn, it would rival the doorstop edition of Regardie's Complete Golden Dawn (Falcon Press, 1984), and put it out of the price range of most readers. Rather than attempting to be a definitive, all inclusive timeline, this simple book is meant to assist readers and researchers as they study other historical books relating to the Golden Dawn. The Golden Dawn books of the past have traditionally focused on the more exciting and turbulent aspects of the Order. Some readers might get the impression that the Golden Dawn was always in "quarrels and continual disturbance," but this could not be further from the truth. There were many happy and fruitful years within the Order that have been less apparent. Our primary purpose in writing this book is to offer our readers a general overview of the connections and parallels of the Golden Dawn history in a readable chronology. As I worked on my Golden Dawn study series over the several years, I created my own chronology to assist me. After talking with Mary K. Greer, we decided to combine our chronologies and present them to the public so that other scholars, researchers and magicians might have the benefit of these brief and sketchy road maps. We welcome additions and corrections from our readers as we hope to reprint this volume in a moderately expanded format in years to come.

Hyatt Christopher - The Black Book Volume III - Galts Ark Vol 01

When Dr. Hyatt first proposed the Black Books, I thought it a brilliant
idea. He has always been an "elitistv-though it continues to amaze me
that many readers of his books cannot seem to get that simple fact
through their heads-and this would be a great opportunity to publish
more of his most radical ideas. He has always been interested in that small percentage of homo sapiens at the extreme ends of the bell-shaped curve-certainly, those who have already accomplished something notable with their lives; but even more, those who have the potential to be independent and truly free humans, despite having been damaged by the rigors of living in the insane world of homo normalis. Those who recognize that their lives are their own to do with as they will, and do not whine about how much the world "owes them." (And as clearly as he has said so in numerous books, it's astonishing how many write to him demanding that he provide help simply because.. .) So, if you are one of those who are still looking for that big tit in the sky, who believe that you have a claim on others just "because," get this straight: YOU'RE IN THE WRONG PLACE!

This work confronts the reader with his own fears and inhibitions --- and carries him beyond. Comprehensively illustrated, this volume contains a detailed history of European "Black Magic" and includes new editions of 17th and 18th century Grimoires with detailed instructions for their use. Graham Hancock - Supernatural - Meetings with the Ancient Teachers of Mankind

Graham Hancock, the author of Supernatural: Meetings with the Ancient Teachers of Mankind could never be accused of pussyfooting around the revelations of his research, and he certainly postulates the heck out of the place of consciousness altering agents in the shamanic origins of religion and consciousness itself. It's a brilliant, breakthrough book which comes close to being the unified field theory of, if not all of the supernatural, at least of all encounters between humans and supernatural beings.  Hancock begins with a description of his own visionary experiences with the hallucinogen Ibogaine, which he took, with a logical vigor that escapes most academics, in order to truly gauge its effect, and therefore the validity of his theories. He follows this with a (perhaps too) meticulous examination of the cave paintings that represent the beginnings of human art, concentrating on their bizarre and seemingly inexplicable nature, at once representative and fantastic, a contradiction that the bonehead academics have (naturally) been totally unable to puzzle out in over a hundred years of trying.

Graham Hancock - Fingerprints of the Gods

In his intriguing work, Graham Hancock offers a number of mysteries regarding Humanity and Civilization, and then proceeds to write his conclusions. I must say I found his ideas quite plausible, mostly because he is not alone in this field and many other authors, working independently, have also published similar books, or works that deal with areas that coincide with Hancock's main conclusions. It is amazing, though, to read so many of the negative comments loaded with animosity and almost personal loathing of not only the book, but of the author as well. Also, to those readers who patronizingly tell the rest of us to read real science, or check with real archaeologists, the truth is that scientists are every bit as passionate about their dogmas, as religious fanatics are about theirs. Peer review is all very well, as long as you don't deviate from the established paradigm. Otherwise your career as a scientist is in serious jeopardy. It happened to geologist Virginia Steen-McIntyre, who went ahead with her dating of a Mexican site: she was fired, her career ended, and the date for the site was established at a less provocative age that didn't threaten conventional wisdom. Therefore a message to those who trust "science" will provide the answers: it will, but since science is made by humans, imperfection at all levels is part of the baggage. The so-called "Anomalous Objects" in museums fill rooms, almost nobody gets to see them, and they are there, stashed away, because they do not fit with our traditional view of history, geology, archaeology, etc. Graham Hancock has simply published a book that forces us to question the validity of the information previously absorbed, and brings forward ideas from other people which have as much validity as the traditionally taught history of Egyptians or Mayans. The truth is, when the evidence presented by archaeologists, egyptologists, and other professionals is examined critically, the traditional school is very far from convincing. This does not mean that the general public is ignorant or gullible. It means that when we cannot build a replica of the Great Pyramid today, with our technology (the Japanese tried and failed, and theirs was a far smaller "scale" replica), but are expected to believe that copper-tools wielding Egyptians could (2.3 million blocks of stone; weights going from 1.5 tons to 15 and 17 tons; "killer" slope of 52 degrees; near perfect alignement; perfect 90-degree corners; perfectly cut diorite blocks, and so on), then is when inquisitive, intelligent people wonder, How is that possible? Since traditional science provides answers that prove usatisfactory because they really feel like nonsense, people will look for alternative scenarios. Graham Hancock provides such scenario. He may be wrong, but his points are as solid, or more, than those of the now-accepted school of thought.

Graham Hancock, Robert Bauval - The Message of the Sphinx

Is the Sphinx of prehistoric origin? Why was it built? In this provocative, rigorously argued report, revisionist Egyptologists Hancock (The Fingerprints of the Gods) and Bauval (The Orion Mystery) join forces to answer these questions and more as they examine the Sphinx and its relation to the other monuments of the Giza plateau. Working from the premise that the Giza complex encodes a message, they begin with recently discovered geological evidence indicating that the deep erosion patterns on the flanks of the Sphinx were caused by 1000 years of heavy rain. Such conditions last existed in Egypt at the end of the last ice age, about 10,000-9,000 B.C., meaning that the Sphinx may be more than 12,000 years old (not the generally accepted 4500 years). The authors go on to suggest, using computer simulations of the sky, that the pyramids, representing the three stars of Orion's Belt, along with associated causeways and alignments, constitute a record in stone of the celestial array at the vernal equinox in 10,500 B.C. This moment, they contend, represents Zep Tepi, the "First Time," often referred to in the hieroglyphic record. They show how the initiation rituals of the Egyptian pharaohs replicate on Earth the sun's journey through the stars in this remote era, and they suggest that the "Hall of Records" of a lost civilization may be located by treating the Giza Plateau as a template of these same ancient skies. These daring, well-argued theories will raise the hackles of orthodox Egyptologists?but that doesn't mean they're wrong.

Golden Dawn Rituals Vol 1 Three Officer Version Promotional Preview Copy

This particular version of the Golden Dawn Neophyte (0=0) Ritual arose during the early days of Bast Temple (B.I.O.R.C.) which was originally established to serve the needs of the students of the Golden Dawn tradition living in Denver, Colorado. This revised ritual was designed to address a specific need of the lodge--the lack of enough people to do the traditional version of the ritual--a problem that plagues many Golden Dawn based groups during their early years.
The traditional ritual calls for eleven officers (five of them being of the Adept Minor Grade or higher), which are more members than the typical group can muster when starting out. This has resulted in a few groups having a stranglehold on the entire tradition, allowing them to require members to travel long distances to undergo initiations and attend seminars, and/or having the members trust the officers of the group to be able to perform an adequate astral (long-distance) initiation. Some students faced with these options chose the route of self-initiation instead. This lack of lodges has led to a general lack of understanding about what actually goes on in the lodges; it also has the continuing effect of insuring that only a handful of Golden Dawn based lodges exist.

Nick Farrell - Notes on Geomancy

What follows are instructions on Geomancy within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn structure. This book was written because, face it, Geomancy is considered a chore by most students. On one hand it seems complicated and on the other it is so deterministic that it makes it unattractive to anyone who likes to think about their divination. The Golden Dawn system of Geomancy was based on Agrippa's fourth book, although it included a lot of very simple additional material which was not familiar to the medieval users of Geomancy. Some of this was good, such as the astrological system of placing the sigils in the houses, other sides of it were bad, such as the meanings of the planets in the houses. While holding to most of the GD tradition, this book simplifies the system and attempts to modernise it using more recent interpretations of the planetary aspects. It also plays down a lot of the doom that is associated with some of the sigils. Unlike the medieval system which gave birth to Geomancy, we no longer see Saturn and Scorpio as the great malefics and regard them as teachers or even positive forces. This little book is mostly my notes. It was designed to bring together a lot of different teachings under one banner to make it easier for Paola to study. It is not complete, particularly when it comes to the method of interpretation which requires skill and reading on astrological interpretation. However it does give an idea which should improve most people's Geomancy readings. Another thing that people should be aware of is that Geomancy readings get faster and more accurate with practice. Performing a reading a day on a different subject for a month will be enough. While it is still not as quick as a tarot divination, it is a lot more accurate and provides a great deal of detail.

Farrell Nick - Making Talismans

Talismans and How They Work A talisman, amulet, or charm is any physical object that stores and radiates a magical energy to create change. A metallic disk, stone, wand, sword, pen, paper, or television remote control can be a talisman provided that it is dedicated toward a "magical purpose. The definition of magic, however, has successfully eluded occultists for centuries. Aleister Crowley, a Golden Dawn adept, devised the most widely accepted definition of magic. He argued that magic is "the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with will, but this is too wide a definition to be of much use. Crowley, himself, admitted that this definition implies that any willed act is magical. While turning on a light switch may be perceived as magical to someone who has not seen electricity, most would not define it as a magical act. Another definition of magic, touted by more than one magical school of which I have been a member, is "the art of causing meaningful coincidences at will." This is equally unsatisfactory, though, since magical work does not always create coincidences that can be seen on the material plane.
While it is not entirely satisfactory either, my definition of magic is " the art and science of becoming a co-creator with a Supreme God. This is not to say that we can be co-equal with the Most High, but rather that we merge into Divinity and its purpose. Occultism teaches that everyone has unlimited potential. We stop becoming successful only when we forget that we are part of an infinite creator. This divine creator aspect of us is like a divine secret self; Jung called it the Higher Self. As this self is realized, we become more in tune with the Divine and have access to more of its powers. Occult techniques bring us to a gradual realization of our immortal nature over a period of incarnations. In the early stages of occult training, we develop enough belief in its concepts to effect changes in our material surroundings. Using my definition, a talisman, amulet, or charm is a material object that stores and transmits a fusion of the magician's will and universal powers to create something new. How Talismans Work To know how talismans, amulets, and charms work, it is important to know how things in the universe are created. Like a physicist, an occultist defines the universe as being made up of energy vibrating at different frequencies. Occultists, however, say this energy is intelligent and is the material part of a single divine being. They go further to say that this energy extends to higher frequencies than have been identified by physicists. Occultists define four frequencies or levels that exist within different dimensions of the same space (figure 1). These are sometimes called the four worlds of the Cabbalah. These worlds interact and affect each other. An event that happens on one level of creation will affect all the others. A form of Jewish mysticism called Cabbalah named these levels Atziluth, the world of deity; Briah, the world of creation; Yetzirah, the world of formation; and Assiah, the world of matter. The highest frequency is the creative intelligence of the universe or a Supreme God. This is where all ideas in the universe are born. These divine ideas filter down to the next level where they become an impulse toward a particular direction. At this level, the ancients noted that parts of God divided into specializations. For example, one specialization would bea creator and another a destroyer. The ancients named these divine specializations archangels. If God's idea were to create dogs, then the archangel would map out the details of what would make up a dog and its evolutionary destiny. The work of the archangels filters down to the next level. Here the divine plan is drawn in greater detail. The ancients noted that different parts of the archangel would specialize again into what they called angels. There was one angel for each part of the creation. Using the last example, there would be an angel responsible for creating each dog's teeth, another for its hair, and another for working out each animal's time of death. Once this work has been carried out, the image of the dog is strong enough to manifest on the material plane. Here the images are formed, under the angel's instructions, out of beings called elementals. These creatures are partly built of spirit, but resonate to different types of matter and effectively build the image on the material level. There are four types of elementals, which are described in terms of the type of matter they resemble. The lowest level of elementals are the earth elementals, or gnomes, which represent solids. Higher up are the water elementals, or undines, which represent liquids. The next highest are the air elementals, or sylphs, which represent gases. The highest level of elementals are the fire elementals, or salamanders, which represent radiant energy.
A talisman is like the foot of a ladder through the four worlds. It contacts the divine idea and the correct archangel, angel, and elemental builders. It continuously pours power into all four levels until the desired result takes place. Making its physical design resonate to the forces that it is trying to contact makes the loading of the talisman easier. The talisman should be a color and shape that corresponds to the force that you wish to attract. It should have occult signs and divine names of power that occultists agree are the earthly representations of the four worlds, and it should be made at a time when those powers are the strongest.

Farrell Nick - Crata Repoa

This small, and largely forgotten work was influential on the development of the Western Mystery Tradition. Concepts and the belief in the idea of a particular type of initiation system, or the Mysteries, were first formed by this text. Historically its claims are bogus or unlikely but have been up-held by groups that used it as a template including the European Esoteric Freemasonic Groups.
These in turn influenced the English speaking Rosicrusian Orders including the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the OTO, AMORC, Builders of the Adytum and Dion Fortune.

Chic Cicero, Sandra Tabatha Cicero - Secrets of a Golden Dawn Temple - Book 1 - Creating Magical Tools

The act of constructing a wand or other ritual object is an act of magic. The magician spends an extraordinary amount of time creating ritual objects, not because it is only through these objects that magic can rightly be performed, but because the act of creating is a magical process of growth, one which initiates the development of the will in accordance with the divine intent or purpose. This in turn contributes to the success of the ritual. The construction of a ritual object should be treated like any other magical operation. It should focus all parts of the magician's mind (intellect, creativity, imagination, spiritual self) into one purpose to manifest an object which will be a receptacle for higher forces, in order that the magician too can become a worthy receptacle of that which is divine. Chic Cicero and S. Tabatha Cicero have been instrumental in preserving the mystical wisdom of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Their Secrets of a Golden Dawn Temple: The Alchemy and Crafting of Magickal Implements was the first book to bring you detailed instructions on crafting and using the ritual implements of the Golden Dawn system of magic. Now their classic text has been updated. This is the most complete book to date on the construction of the many tools used in the Golden Dawn system of magic. Here is a unique compilation of the various tools of the Golden Dawn, all described in full: wands, swords, elemental tools, Enochian Tablets, altars, temple furniture, banners, pillars, thrones, lamens, mantles and robes, ritual headdresses and ceremonial clothing, admission badges, and much more. This book provides complete step-by-step instructions for the construction of nearly 80 different implements, all displayed in photographs or drawings, along with the exact symbolism behind each and every item.

I wrote, a few months ago, a work on the Roman Catholic Religion, which, as I hear from the- booksellers, has hud a good sale among
the rich. I might, indeed, rest satisfied with this success, if, even at the time when I was working hard with my pen, a whisper within had not said to me " Are you sure that the prospect of gain or praise is not the real cause of all this labour ?"--" I am well aware (said I) that the heart is deceitful above all things*, and that, sure as I feel of the purity of my motives, yet something may be wrong in them. I will, however, with God's blessing, if this book should be well received, write another for the poor. I will give it away to be printed for them at the cheapest rate, and will make no profit at all by it. I will take care, besides, that it contain, in a small
compass, more than my work for the higher classes; and it shall be written in a manner that will require no learning to be well understood." My book, as I have told you already, was published, and the great people were pleased to say that I had pn my point. Then letters came to me from some very worthy gentlemen, urging me to print a cheaper edition of my work, that it be within the power of the poor to buy it. I was thankful indeed for this piece of advice : but my mind had been previously made up to go beyond it. It cheered me up, however, and I immediately set about composing this little work on purpose for you. But when I took up the pen I was very undecided as to the manner which would best afford you both instruction and entertainment. After casting many schemes in my mind, it appeared to me, that by imagining myself sitting by your side, and entering into a conversation upon the subject which I propose to treat, I should make the reading of this book less tiresome, than if I wrote in the usual way, and had all the talk to myself, in set chapters. I mean, therefore, to give you a share in the composition of the work itself: and though it is impossible for me to guess exactly what you would say if we were conversing together, I hope that the questions and remarks which I shall put in your mouth, will be such as you would not be sorry to have used, and not very unlike those which your own mind would suggest. Let us, then, if you please, begin our first
conversation, or Dialogue ; in which you will bear the name of Reader, and myself that of
Author: and may God bless the result to both of us.

Whately, Richard - Rise, Progress and Corruptions of Christianity

THE following pages, by Archbishop Whately, make one of the six celebrated Introductory Essays which precede and form a pendent to the new edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, now in course of publication, the other five having been produced by Professor Dugald Stewart, Sir
James Mackintosh, with additions by William Whewell, D.D., Professors John Playfair, Sir John Leslie, and James Duncan Forbes. The reputation and popularity of all these Authors are as universal in the Western as on the Eastern Continent, as that of Baron Macaulay, Lord Brougham, Dr. Chalmers, or Sydney Smith. Hence it requires nothing to be said in commendation of anything that any of these authors may have written, in presenting them to the public. This Treatise has never before appeared in book form, either in Europe or America. In consequence, it was deemed advisable to present it in this shape, thereby rendering it accessible to all who had a desire to consult the subject treated of; namely "The Rise, Progress, and Corruptions of Christianity," a subject full of interest to every intelligent mind. I have collected the titles of all the Treatises of this gifted and voluminous author, and presented them in chronological order, with a scanty biographical sketch. I have the pleasure to announce that I have the approbation, as well as the sanction, of the author, through his bookseller, to print and publish any or all of his books in America, providing that is done in an unrnutilated or uninterpolated form, which, I understand, has not been the case with certain of his works which have been reprinted in this country. With respect to the present Treatise, the reader may rest assured that it is a faithful reprint of the original.

Ward, Thomas - Errata of the Protestant Bible

The publication of Ward's " Errata to the Protestant Bible" has disclosed a most curious and important fact, that the scriptural church of England and Ireland was originally founded on a false translation of the scriptures. It was
the boast of the first reformers, that they had emancipated their disciples from the shackles of Catholic despotism, and had restored to them the freedom of the children of God : it now appears, that this freedom consisted in reading
an erroneous version of the inspired writings, and in venerating as the dictates of eternal Wisdom the blunders of ignorant or interested translators. "The scriptures," they exclaimed, " are the sole rule of faith. Here they are, no
longer concealed under the obscurity of a learned language, but exhibited to you in your native tongue. Here vou will easily delect the errors of Popery, and learn the true doctrmc of the Gospel."

John Mason - The Absurdities of Popery

To show that Popery is unchanged, and unchangeable, we present to the reader an extract from a work published in Paris, 1836, entitled " The Life and Miracles of St. Philomene." This book is translated from the Italian, and is exceedingly curious ; and it shows that the religion of Rome is precisely the same, at this moment, as it was in the very worst days of Papal idolatry ; and that the same means are resorted to by the priesthood of these days to perpetuate ignorance and superstition, as were resorted to in the darkest ages of delusion and barbarism. The original work in the Italian language has, within a very few years, gone through fifteen editions. One of these editions has the
" Imprimatur" of that execrable tribunal, the Inquisition, Dec. 12th, 1833. Another of them is addressed to the Bishops, Archbishops, and Princes of the Church ; and the French translation is recommended "to the faithful" by the exhortation of the Bishop of Stratsburg. To a stranger, unacquainted with the absurdities and abominations of Popery, the contents of this volume will appear
unaccountable. Such a mass of blasphemy, ignorance, and childishness was hardly ever put together in one small book.

Sinclair, John - The Morals of the Church of Rome

The temporal throne of tlie Roman Pontiff has for some years past been in a tottering condition, and would at once be overturned by his own misgoverned subjects, if they were not in dread of foreign intervention. But with regard to the lofty spiritual pretensions of the Papacy the case is different. These are put forth in their most exaggerated form, with an overbearing confidence calculated to astound and overawe the weak-minded. The efforts of the Propaganda have for some years past been specially directed to this country. Money is nowhere wanting for Popish objects, chapels, colleges, schools, and monastic institutions of all kinds, are rising up in every quarter of the kingdom. Even members of our own body have allowed themselves to be perverted. And already the Papal Hierarchy is triumphantly anticipating tlie subjection of this country to the Apostolic See, and the exertion of its world-wide influence for the dissemination of Eomish doctrine. '' England," says Dr. Manning, in a recently published sermon, *' England is the head of Protestantism ; the centre of its movements, and the stronghold of its powers. Weakened in England, it is paralyzed every where ; conquered in England, it is conquered throughout the world : once overthrown here, all is but a warfare of detail. All the roads of the whole world meet in one point, and this point reached, the whole world lies open to the Church's will. It is the key of the whole position of modern error." Without enlarging on the various schemes of pacification and re-union with Rome, in which we are exhorted to accept of all or nearly all the errors that Rome has ever propounded, I may assume that there never was a time when it was more necessary, not only for ourselves, but for our people, to keep in mind what Popery is in respect of doctrine^ worship, and morals.

Rose, H. - The Churches and Usury

Make for thyself a definition or description of the thing which is presented to thee, so as to see distinctly what kind of a thing it is, in its substance, in its nudity, in its complete entirety, and tell thyself its proper name, and
the names of the things of which it has been compounded, and into which it will be resolved. For nothing is so productive of elevation of mind as to be able to examine methodically and truly every object which is presented to thee in life, and always to look at things so as to see at the same time what kind of universe this is, and what kind of use everything performs in it, and what value everything has with reference to the whole, and what with reference to man, who is a citizen of the highest city, of which all other cities are like families ; what each thing is, and of what it is composed, and how long it is the nature of this thing to endure. Marcus Aurelius Antoninus.

Poole, Richard - Benedict IX and Gregory VI

IT is a famous story that in 1046 King Henry III of Germany went into Italy and held a synod at which three Popes were deposed. It appears in perhaps its most picturesque form in the Bari annals known as the Chronicle of Lupus Protospatharius, an author who wrote about forty years later and who did not so much as know the German king's name. 'In this year', he says, Conus', that is Conrad, 'king of the Alemans went to Rome because there were three Popes there : Silvester in St. Peter's Church, Gregory in the Lateran, and Benedict in the Tusculan. They were expelled, and Clement was consecrated by the aforesaid emperor.' Now there is no doubt that at various dates in the preceding two years three men had occupied the Holy See ; but whether all the three were claimants to it in 1046 is still disputed.

Dorothy M. Peters - Noah Traditions in the Dead Sea Scrolls

As father of all humanity and not exclusively of Israel, Noah was a problematic ancestor for some Jews in the Second Temple period. His archetypical portrayals in the Dead Sea Scrolls, differently nuanced in Hebrew and Aramaic, embodied the tensions for groups that were struggling to understand both their distinctive self-identities within Judaism and their relationship to the nations among whom they lived. Dually located within a trajectory of early Christian and rabbinic interpretation of Noah and within the Jewish Hellenistic milieu of the Second Temple period, this study of the Noah traditions in the Dead Sea Scrolls illuminates living conversations and controversies among the people who transmitted them and promises to have implications for ancient questions and debates that extended considerably beyond the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Painter, William - Popery - The Enemy and the Falsifier of Scripture

If there be one fact more notorious tlian another in the practice ofthe modern Church of Rome, it is the sedulous and incessant care with which—in all countries where Popery is dominant —her bishops and priests keep the holy Scriptures from the people. Where, however. Papists live in society with Protestants, they would gladly conceal this fact, if it were possible ; and they spare no pains to cause it to be believed, that their section of the universal Church never withheld the Bible from the people. Hence the Romish " bishops, and vicars apostolic, and their coadjutors in Great Britain," in their " Declaration," which was first published in 1826, and which has recently been re-printed,* complain that " they are still exhibited to the public as enemies to the circulation and to the reading of the holy Scriptures (Preamble, p. 4) ; and that " the Catholic" [Romish] " Church is held out as an enemy to the readimj and
circulating of the holy Scriptures^ (Sect. 3, p. 7).

Milner, John - The End of Religious Controversy

Preface:

In tihis work, entitled "The End of Religious Controversy the author and his correspondents having established the certainty of divine revelation and the truth of the Christian religion he proposes the means by which, among the various discordant creeds of those who profess Christianity, the true faith which Jesus Christ brought down from heaven, and the true church which he established on earth, may be discovered. He undertakes to prove that we are provided with the certain means of making this discovery, and that Christ himself has left us a rule ; ojjaith adapted to the capacities of all, by which we may come to the knowledge of true religion.

McCulloch, Thomas - Popery Condemned by Scripture and Fathers

Preface:

THE foiiowing Refutation was occasioned by a virulent attack upon the Protestant religion, and a defence of Popery, which has been published anonymously, and circulated with great industry through Nova Scotia and the adjacent province?. Though I have no wish to excite animosity among the subjects of a Government, whose indulgent mildness ought to satisfy every religious party, I conceived it my duty to appear in defence of those principles which our ancestors have transmitted to us with the testimony of their blood. It appeared to me, also, that .something of this kind was requisite in a country
where books upon the Popish controversy are rarely to be found, and w^here Papists propagate their doctrines with a zeal that would do honour to a better cause : And besides, the Author of the Remarks needed a little wholesome
castigation, to prevent him from arrogating to himself a victory, to which he has no claim.

Mathew, Arnold - Life and Times of Rodrigo Borgia - Pope Alexander VI

Preface:

THE object I have in view in writing this book is merely to present as accurate a sketch of the life and times of the principal member of the Borgia family as it seems possible to produce, with the comparatively
few contemporary materials that are now available. The second and third volumes of Monsieur Thuasne's Latin edition of the Diary of John Burchard Bishop of Orta, afford much trustworthy information at
first hand. The value of this information has been minimised, firstly, by those who, like Leibnitz, have published merely extracts from it, conveying a false impression of the work itself ; and, secondly, by Borgian apologists, who have striven to cast doubts upon the veracity of the Bishop of Orta, or to attribute those entries in his Diary which tell against the Spanish Pope to interpolators who were the alleged enemies of his Holiness, and anxious to defame him. The Diary begins in 1483 and ends, with the death of its author, in 1506. In the short space of twentythree years, during which Burchard held the office of Pontifical Master of the Ceremonies, no fewer than five Popes had been personally known and served by him. He resided in the Vatican, and, as was customary, kept, for his own private use and information, a daily record of the events which interested him. This Diary was obviously not intended for publication, nor for any other eye than that of Burchard himself. The original Diary is now kept securely locked up in the Vatican, and
would probably never have seen the light of day had it not been for Rodrigo Borgia's namesake, Pope
Alexander VII. (1655-67), who caused a copy of it to be made for his kinsman, Prince Chigi, who
placed it in the library of the Chigi Palace. It thus became accessible to historical and liturgical students,
and extracts from it have, from time to time, appeared, whilst all historians of the period it covers
have sought information in its pages.
